Gibside School is a special needs school located in Whickham, Gateshead It serves children with different types of disabilities
Gibside is a school where every one is respected and valued for their contribution – pupils, staff and parents alike. We are committed to equal opportunities and social equality.
Gibside is a purpose built primary co-educational day school for children with learning difficulties. Gibside is an autism friendly school and we have designated provision for autism. Currently many of our pupils have a diagnosis of autism. The majority of these are placed in 5 autism specific bases with some children in our main school classes.Gibside has 85 pupils on roll and has a total of 65 staff: Head Teacher, Deputy Head Teacher, 13 teachers, 24 special support assistants and 12 mid day supervisory assistants. There are a number of additional support staff. At Gibside we have a total communication ethos. We work in a multi-disciplinary setting with professionals from Health, Social and Psychological Services and other Voluntary Bodies.Gibside is an attractive one-storey building. All classrooms are spacious, light and airy with both carpeted and wet areas. Interactive areas include 2 sensory rooms, 2 soft play rooms, a food technology room, a hydrotherapy pool, physiotherapy room and small group teaching and therapy rooms. We have 2 play yards: - a smaller ‘courtyard’ for infants and a larger ‘big’ yard for juniors. Both have some safe play surfaces and are equipped with fixed outdoor play equipment. There are landscaped grounds to all sides of the school, a large car park and 2 garages for 2 school mini buses, both equipped with a tail lift.
Gibside is situated in a pleasant, residential area in Whickham, in the west of Gateshead Metropolitan Borough.
We are close to a number of local primary schools and Whickham Comprehensive School and we have developed links with them and with the local community. Our pupils regularly go into mainstream schools for inclusive opportunities and children from local primary schools have opportunities to come into Gibside e.g. for music and PE.
